THC vs CBD

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vs. Cannabidiol (CBD)

Do you know what they are or the differences between them?

From a chemical structure standpoint they consist of 21 Carbons, 30 Hydrogens, and 2 oxygen atoms. They both do the same jobs, they work with receptors that release neurotransmitters into your brain, thus affecting sensations like pain, mood, sleep and memory. Structurally is where they differ.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC)

Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation. Generally consumed by smoking cannabis. It’s also available in oils, edibles, tinctures, capsules, and more. This chemical ingredient found in the cannabis plant is responsible for stimulating cells in the brain to release dopamine. In other words, THC contributes to the euphoric feeling you get when partaking in recreational marijuana. The higher the THC, the stronger that euphoric feeling. THC products are used to treat painful symptoms that are associated with pain and nausea.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the other chemical compound found in cannabis, it is non-psychoactive. Therefore, CBD does not contribute to any euphoric feelings, but it does promote the feeling of relaxation and calm. In other words, CBD contributes to the calming and relaxing feeling you get when partaking in recreational marijuana. CBD can be used to treat everyday issues like skin health, sleep, anxiety, pain, and brain health.

In conclusion, both derive from the same cannabis plant but have properties that set them apart. THC is associated with the ‘high’ feelings. While CBD is more known for its health benefits. Before using either, be sure to consult your medical caretaker and consider how these will affect other medications you are already taking.
